How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor.
